Ragwort also known as Senecio Jacobaea is a poisonous weed and is particularly harmful to horses and cattle.

Ingestion of ragwort can cause serious liver damage and even in certain cases death of the animal. The reason for this is it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids compounds that are poisonous to most animals particularly cattle, horses, ponies and donkeys. Ragwort needs to be controlled to prevent damage to animals, however where there is no risk to livestock ragwort is used to contribute to the flora of the countryside. Responsibility for control rests with the occupier of the land on which ragwort is growing.
